On a training mission in the middle of nowhere

At the barracks after 16 hours of labor - shower, wander out back to join the strangers with beer and guitars

a bunch of young field artillery guys

a particularly pretty sandy-haired one playing and signing, everyone is watching him. Even cuter black-haired one standing behind him humming harmonies

fast fort-forward, sandy-hair takes me on a beer run, confesses that he got too drunk last night and had a fist-fight with dark hair.

return to barracks, dark hair is loitering outside, the rest of the guys have gone to sleep. Makes his goodbyes to sandy. Dark hair has to go back to his own barracks.

Sandy protests.

Dark hair says, can’t do more beer, we beat the hell out of each other last night and I don’t think either of us remembers why even

And indeed, sandy hair brushes his fingers over a broad scrape on black hair’s forehead, looking unhappy

And gives a manly if small I’m sorry

Black hair shrugs, says “it didn’t mean anything”

they stare at each other silently for a long minute

clearly having forgotten I was there

Black hair adds, “it isn’t so bad”, gingerly touching his fucked up forehead

A moment passes

Sandy hair says: “I crawled in your bunk with you last night and held and ice pack to your head until I fell asleep. Your commander found me this morning and flipped out. I ran.”

Black hair just blinks several times

Then a small smile
